During the 2020-2021 season and the pandemic shut down, Butler Wrestling’s youth program was unable to utilize the Butler School District facilities during their November-February regular season. There was no elementary wrestling that season. Upon the lifting of the restrictions in the spring, many families wanted to have a modified training season for their young wrestlers. It was at this time that Butler High School Coach, Scott Stoner approached the First United Methodist Church about using the old Knights of Columbus Building which was under their ownership. Pre- pandemic, the building was used for a number of church services as well as housing various community outreach groups. Those church groups were now only operating at a minimum, so space was provided on the first floor, and a partnership between FUMC and Butler Wrestling was formed. Once the mats were moved in, a process of painting, removing stages, sound booths, and lighting began to transform the area to what is in place now.
Once wrestling practices began at Legacy, Coach Stoner who is a Physical Education Teacher in the Butler Area School District, quickly realized what a great space he had available. At this point he began to expand programs to include other fitness areas of interest that could serve the community beyond wrestling. Fitness classes including yoga, Zumba, dance, and other programs were scheduled. Gymnastics classes were added with Brittany Panei. Caitlyn Wesley became a regular instructor with her dance fitness classes. Summer youth strength and conditioning classes with Coach Stoner are held as well. Recently, we have welcomed the addition of youth through senior age fitness classes with Katie Werner. As our programs continue to grow please check our updated schedule for the programs that may be of interest to you!
The name “Legacy” was forged upon this organization when we looked at bios of our wrestling staff. Wrestling requires a special breed of people who exude hard work and resiliency in the face of great challenges. There is a constant striving for success while the possibility of falling short and failing is always present. What one does to remedy shortcomings and move forward is what defines wrestlers. This staff has been assembled over the years and has contributed to the consistent success in the Butler Wrestling program. This staff has dedicated themselves over a lifetime to the sport of wrestling as athletes and coaches.
